Discover Sicilia with our car rental in Palermo
A walk through the streets of the city is a leap in history: different epochs are revealed in a great artistic and architectural heritage that ranges from the remains of Punic walls to the Art Nouveau villas, the Arabian-Norman Residences, the baroque churches and the neoclassical theatres. A veritable outdoor museum. Surprisingly beautiful for the perfect integration of different styles is the Cathedral of Palermo, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Assumption and recently declared a World Heritage Site (UNESCO).
One of the most representative jewels of Palermo is undoubtedly the Teatro Massimo that, in addition to hosting all year long a rich calendar of shows, events and concerts, is fascinating for its elegance and stands out as the greatest lyric theatre in Italy and one of the largest in Europe, after the Opéra National de Paris and the Vienna State Opera. Not far from Palermo it’s Mondello: the clear blue sea and white sand Caribbean beach, one of the most coveted in Sicily for its numerous Art Nouveau villas and sites of historical interest.
But the most authentic and «delicious» face of Palermo is shown by its historical markets: Ballarò, Vucciria, il Capo. Walking through the market stalls is like traveling in the gastronomy and in the tradition of Palermo: voices, smells, colors, flavours in a cheerful and bubbly confusion. In wooden boxes, like chests full of treasures, stand yellow gold lemons, fresh and salted sardines, shrimps, olives, dried tomatoes and many other typical products. And why not enjoy the delicious street food at the Vucciria market?! The roll with fritters and croquettes, arancini, the sfincione: authentic flavours that enchant the palate and Palermo has won the fifth place in the world of street food.
